Answers to the questions we hear most about Bonaire and about booking with us. Is your question not here? Just ask Caprice.

Where is Bonaire?

Bonaire is a small island in the southern Caribbean Sea, north of Venezuela. Together with Sint Eustatius and Saba it is a special municipality of the Netherlands, also known as the Caribbean Netherlands.

Which languages are spoken on Bonaire?

Dutch is the official language, but most people speak Papiamento, a local creole language with Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African roots. English and Spanish are widely spoken too, especially in tourist areas.

Which currency is used?

The US dollar. Credit cards are accepted in most places.

Do I need a visa?

That depends on your nationality. Visitors from most countries, including the United States, Canada and the European Union, do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Check with your embassy or consulate before you travel.

Do I pay tourist tax on Bonaire?

Yes. Every visitor pays a one-time entry tax of USD 75, which replaced the nightly accommodation tax in July 2022. You also pay the mandatory Stinapa nature fee for the marine park. Pay both online before you travel to avoid lines at the airport.

When is the best time to visit?

Bonaire is warm all year, so any month works. From December to April it is usually sunniest, with calm seas for diving. From May to November the island is quieter, with a bit more rain.

What is the weather like?

Warm all year, between 25 and 31 °C (78 and 88 °F). There is some rain, but it is mostly sunny. The constant trade wind makes it less humid than many other Caribbean islands.

How do I get around?

Rent a car or a scooter. Public transport is limited and taxis get expensive on longer trips. Through us you get 10% off at Pick up Huren Bonaire with the code happyhomesbonaire.

Is Bonaire safe?

Bonaire is considered very safe, with a low crime rate, and most people walk around without worry. As anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings.

Can I use my phone and the internet?

Most international phone plans work on Bonaire, though roaming charges may apply. Local SIM cards are available for data and local calls. All our homes have Wi-Fi.

Can I drink the tap water?

Yes, tap water is generally safe to drink, and bottled water is easy to find. No special vaccinations are needed, but make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date and your travel insurance covers medical costs.

Is Bonaire good for families?

Yes. The beaches are calm, there is plenty of nature and children who like the sea can snorkel close to the shore. Children are welcome in most of our homes.

How do payment and the deposit work?

You pay 25% when you book and the rest 40 days before arrival. On arrival day we place a hold of USD 250 on your credit card, which is released 3 days after departure. Prepayments are non-refundable, so we advise travel insurance that covers cancellation.

Can I bring my pet?

In most homes pets are not allowed. Pets are welcome at Villa Isa-Mae, and at Villa Cascaya they can come once we have agreed on it.
